Marty Tankleff woke up on the first day of his senior year in high school to discover his mother and father brutally stabbed and bludgeoned, his mother—Arlene Tankleff—dead, his father—Seymour Tankleff—unconscious but alive. Marty called and gave first-aid to his father.

Instead, the lead detective immediately took Marty to the police station and began a hostile interrogation of him that would last for hours. At the time of the Tankleff murders, Suffolk County law enforcement was under investigation for corruption—including problems with coerced confessions—by the State Investigation Commission SIC on the order of Governor Mario Cuomo. After passing the Uniform Bar Exam he continued his efforts to give a voice to the wrongfully convicted by serving on numerous Boards and Committees.

From the time of his release, he has been a zealous and vocal advocate for those who have been wrongly convicted. Marty regularly speaks at colleges, universities and high schools. Additionally, he was appointed as a paralegal on a death eligible case in the Eastern District of New York.

James McCready — a confession that the teen recanted almost immediately and refused to sign. Maintaining his innocence, Marty obtained pro bono legal assistance and persevered through multiple appeals filed in state and federal courts.

New evidence emerged that pointed to Jerry Steuerman as the orchestrator of the murders. When Harris was denied immunity by Judge Stephen Braslow in a July hearing, Harris invoked his Fifth Amendment right and his testimony went unheard. A lot of exonerees have been active in trying to reform the system and Marty has always been outstanding in that way.

Tankleff was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison in for bludgeoning and stabbing his parents, Arlene and Seymour Tankleff, to death in their Belle Terre home in He was 17 at the time of his parents' deaths. Tankleff's conviction was based largely on a confession that Tankleff repudiated almost immediately and refused to sign.

Steuerman has always denied any involvement in the murders. Tankleff said the bar admittance process was "torturous," but he got through it with his attorneys' help and the love and support of his wife Laurie and their daughter Kourtney.
