In the original Super Nintendo version of the game, an error condition may occur while loading, that sends Link to a Top Secret Room owned by Chris Houlihan.

Here, Chris Houlihan telepathically communicates with the hero, informing him that the room belongs to him. The room itself contains Rupees for Link to collect, with a cave-like appearance.

In the early s, an individual named Chris Houlihan won a contest held by Nintendo Power , in which the winner would be allowed to have his name appear in the game if they snapped a photograph of a rare and elusive Final Fantasy boss named Warmech. The winner was announced to have been Chris Houlihan; however, the game his name would subsequently appear in was not announced at the time.

Because of the contest, the North American version of A Link to the Past contained Chris as a character and owner of the aforementioned secret room. In all later ports of the game, any mention of Chris Houlihan is removed, but his secret room remains, only with the room labeled "Top Secret Room".

Nobody on teh intarnets seems to know in which issue the contest ran, or what the details of the contest were, but the winner would get to have his name featured in a secret room in the next Legend of Zelda game.

Seeing that A Link to the Past came out in , I guess that would make it the next Zelda game, huh? So this person named Chris Houlihan entered and won the contest. And a secret room was created in his honor.

We thought that it could have been a type of bug, but when we received another letter mentioning this room somewhere else and [we were] still unable to find it, we decided to talk directly to whom created the game, so we asked our friends at Nintendo and they informed us that it is a room that appears randomly and there are cartridges where it will never appear.

Chris Houlihan is the name of the boy that won a Nintendo Power contest and with it he also won the right to have his name programmed in the Zelda-A Link to the Past game. This is my top secret room. Keep it between us, OK?
